Hoc Networks under Transceiver Impairments Pengkai Zhao, and Babak Daneshrad Wireless Integrated Systems Research (WISR) Group, Electrical Engineering Department, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095 USA (e-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]) Abstract Transceiver impairments, including phase noise, residual frequency offset, and imperfect channel estimation, significantly affect the performance of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. However, these impairments are not well addressed when analyzing the throughput performance of MIMO Ad Hoc networks. In this paper, we present an analytical framework to evaluate the throughput of MIMO OFDM system under the impairments of phase noise, residual frequency offset, and imperfect channel estimation. Using this framework, we evaluate the Maximum Sum Throughput (MST) in Ad Hoc networks by optimizing the power and modulation schemes of each user. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate not only the improvement in the MST from using multiple antennas, but also the loss in the MST due to the transceiver impairments. The proposed analytical framework is further applied for the distributed implementation of MST in Ad Hoc networks, where the loss caused by impairments is also evaluated. Index Terms MIMO, OFDM, Ad Hoc, phase noise, residual frequency offset, imperfect channel estimation, link adaptation

Joint MIMO-OFDM and MAC Design for Broadband Multihop Ad Hoc Networks
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are very promising techniques to exploit diversity in the physical layer of broadband wireless communications. However, the application of these techniques to broadband multihop ad hoc networks is subject to inefficiencies since existing medium access control (MAC) schemes are designed to allow only one ...
متن کاملThroughput enhancement in wireless ad hoc networks with spatial channels a MAC layer perspective
Use of directional antennas in cellular wireless networks offers many advantages such as range extension, reduced interference for signal detection and improved throughput. Recently, MAC protocols using directional antennas for wireless ad hoc networks that are based on and similar to IEEE 802.11 type WLANs have been proposed. In this paper, we explore ’multiplexing in space’ with directional a...
متن کاملEvaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
متن کاملOn the delay reduction of wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas
It is shown that the throughput capacity of wireless ad hoc networks using omni-directional antennas (OMN networks) is significantly decreased with the increased number of nodes. One major reason lies in the interference caused by using omni-directional antennas, which just broadcast radio signal in all directions. Thus, a communication with multiple short-ranged hops is suggested in such netwo...
متن کاملA New Intrusion Detection System to deal with Black Hole Attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
By extending wireless networks and because of their different nature, some attacks appear in these networks which did not exist in wired networks. Security is a serious challenge for actual implementation in wireless networks. Due to lack of the fixed infrastructure and also because of security holes in routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks, these networks are not protected against attack...
